L’Internationale supports and is interested in participating in the Multitude Art Prize, due to its similarly critical attitude to the various dominant positions and its similar visions for the future.”

Moderna galerija

The Moderna galerija in Ljubljana is the Slovene national institution for modern and contemporary art. In November 2011 it reorganized its activities into two venues, Modernagalerija (the museum of modern art) in the original modernist building in the city centre and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM/MuzejsodobneumetnostiMetelkova) in the former army barracks complex in Metelkova Street. The difference between the two units is based on the historical development of Modernagalerija, founded in 1948, its collections, exhibition policies and the cultural-political contexts, as well as on the need to reevaluate modernism and articulate contemporaneity.  The Modernagalerija/Museum of Modern Art, therefore, focuses on the art of the 20th-century and displays  a selection of works from its national collection from the beginning of the 20th-century to 1991, Continuities and Ruptures, while the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), challenges the ideas of contemporaneity and displays a selection of works from the international collection Arteast 2000+ and the national collections of the Modernagalerija, The Present and Presence, dating from 1960 on and focusing on different notions of time.

Both venues also present temporary exhibitions and host related public programmes. The new name of the two units is an abbreviated form MG+MSUM standing for Moderna galerija/Museum of Modern Art plus Muzej sodobne umetnosti Metelkova/Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova. The curators' offices are in both venues, the photo archive is situated at the Moderna galerija, while the other departments such as the archives, the library, a publications and a conservation-renovation departments are situated at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova.

Moderna galerija in Ljubljana initiated the forming of the network of originally five European institutions called L’Internationale, which aspires toward a more equal exchange of ideas between diverse cultural spaces, a redefinition of history that takes into consideration the plurality of narratives and a critical attitude to existing hegemonic positions.

“L’Internationale supports and is interested in participating in the Multitude Art Prize, due to its similarly critical attitude to the various dominant positions and its similar visions for the future.”
